Skyler Davis Commits to Morgan State
One of NoVA’s top defensive backs has made his college choice, as Skyler Davis committed to Morgan State late last week.
Davis’ statement, shown on social media, read:
“First and foremost, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! My journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. I want to thank my parents for always pushing and supporting me in everything I do. I want to thank all of my coaches at Mount Vernon HS, especially Coach Fritts and Louisville for believing me and trusting me to do my job on the field.”
Davis also thanked Coach Stephens of Perfect Performance and Orlanda Burks of OMS Consulting, as well as the Morgan State coaches.
Reached on Saturday, Davis explained his connection to the state of Maryland.
“Baltimore is basically like home. I’ve been playing in Maryland with Team PP and GYFL since middle school. The coaches and players at Morgan have been welcoming and they treat me like family.”
Davis also had a good visit. “I enjoyed the game day atmosphere and appreciated that a lot of students were at the game against Howard. From the first time I walked on campus I felt like I was wanted there. I also like that the school is putting in a lot of money in infrastructure.”
Major coach Monty Fritts was equally impressed with his standout’s decision.
“We are very proud of him. We think they are getting a high character young man who is one of the best lock down guys in the area.” Davis carries over a “B” average and scored 1230 on his SAT’s. He was also a member of Mt. Vernon’s state track qualifying 4×100 relay team during the spring.
The Majors (8-2) will begin their playoff run on the road against a familiar opponent as they face the Hawks of Hayfield (9-1) in the first round of the Region 6C bracket.
Sampah Gets Offer from Miami
Woodbridge linebacker Antoine Sampah, who has received over two dozen offers, including Alabama, Oklahoma and Tennessee, can now add the “U” to his list of suitors.
On Thursday, the Hurricanes offered the 6-2, 210-pound junior linebacker, and the Viking standout appeared excited about the prospect, at least from the look of his Twitter feed: His tweet read:
“Excited to receive an offer from the University of Miami thru @BallCoach34. Thank you @CoachPatke for the opportunity @CanesInSight #ItsAllAboutTheU#WeBuiltDifferent.”
The verbiage was accentuated with a flexed bicep, praying hands the “U” hand symbol, a hurricane, the number 100 and a palm tree.
Woodbridge was seeded 10th in the top-heavy 6A Region ratings entering the weekend, but finished the regular season with a 30-8 win over Gar-Field to finish 7-3. Although eighth-seeded Justice lost, #9 Robinson, and #7 Hylton also won, so the Vikings may be officially out of the playoff picture when the final ratings come out Monday.
