The ice has finally broken with the recruitment of Keyshawn Copeland.
As a junior, Copeland (2019 QB 6-5 185) threw for just over 1600 yards with 23 touchdowns. That’s not bad for the leader of an offense led by a 2,000+ yard rusher in Ricky Slade. Slade is now headed to Penn State. Copeland has a reason to aspire to similar heights.
In March, we wrote that Keyshawn Copeland drew plenty of interest from Virginia on an unofficial visit.
In early April, Keyshawn won the overall Quarterback MVP for our Clash of the Titans Showcase at Highland Springs High School.
Earlier this month, Keyshawn camped with the Cavaliers. Not only was he impressed on his return visit to Charlottesville, he made an impression on the coaches there. Last week, Copeland got word from the coaching staff that he now holds a scholarship offer from the school.
“(Quarterbacks Coach) Jason Beck told me that the coaches were talking about my performance,” said Copeland. “My forty time was a 4.52 and broad jump was 10 feet. They thought that was impressive. They think I was one of the best quarterbacks at their camp. They remarked on how a lot of my throws were extremely accurate. I was told they have a couple of guys offered, but they wanted to offer me as well.”
“(On my visits) I have loved their facilities. Their weight room is really nice and so is their locker room. Their practice field is indoor and outdoors so you can practice in any conditions. I would love to go there,” Keyshawn said with emphasis.
Copeland made a visit to Charlotte over the weekend and he has a stop at Elon planned for this coming Friday. An Old Dominion camp is in the cards as well.
Not long after the UVA offer came in, Division I FCS Saint Francis University of the Northeast Conference extended an offer.
“(Offensive Coordinator) Eric Long told me I was the first person they called. He said they looked over everything they needed to and they are offering me.”
That gives Keyshawn some momentum headed into the summer. Considering that he has more camp stops lined up, more offers should come. We’ll see where the recruiting trail takes him and we’ll check back in as we approach pre-season practices.
