Bishop Sullivan was off to the races against Bishop O’Connell in one of only three games the Virginia Beach team will play against Virginia opponents this season.
“The Cru” (short for Crusaders) raced out to a 23-0 halftime lead and doubled that number with a running clock that started in the third quarter.
Khalan Laborn took a screen pass on the Crusaders’ first possession of the second half, took a few strides, fumbled the ball at the Knights’ 30, paused to pick it up at the 28, then raced to the end zone virtually untouched for a 40-yard touchdown on a pass from Tyler DeSue. It was that kind of day for Bishop Sullivan.
Back on defense, Bishop Sullivan forced a three and out from the Knights. The coaches yelled to the punt team not to touch the punter on fourth down. They didn’t have to. The snap sailed over the punter’s head and he kicked the ball through the end zone for a safety.
On the ensuing kickoff, freshman DB/WR Sheridan Jones took the kick and returned it 70 yards down the Crusader sideline for a touchdown. The win was a breeze.
Bishop Sullivan’s backups tacked on another touchdown just before the horn on a short running play.
“We were very balance in regards to production. This finishes up a stretch of away games. We’ve been on the road a lot, traveling to Charlotte, to Baltimore, (and Arlington, VA Saturday) and we’ll get a chance to get home and play in the 757 for the next month,” said Coach Chris Scott in the post-game. “There’s no place like home. We come back to the 757 and get a chance to play against the competition that’s coming from New Jersey, Canada and Florida. I think that’s really exciting. It’s exciting for our fans and for our players.”
In a 46-0 win, there’s very little reason for a head coach to complain.
“All around, our defense is very, very stout. They got us out of some problems,” said the coach. “Our return teams (did a good job today). We had Sheridan Jones take one all the way back and Tayvion “Tank” Land is very special with the ball in his hands and you could see that today.”
