After 12 years as an assistant coach at Oscar Smith, Joe Jones will take the reins at Lakeland High School.
Don’t get Coach Jones confused with another Joe Jones with Suffolk connections. Ocean Lakes head coach Joe Jones was the head football coach at King’s Fork High School in Suffolk before taking the job at Ocean Lakes.
This Joe Jones played his high school ball under Richard Morgan. He graduated in 2006 and joined the Tiger coaching staff in 2007. 2006 was the last time that Oscar Smith lost a district game (vs. Hickory) before going on a 99-game district winning streak that ended against King’s Fork in the 2017 season.
Oscar Smith bloomed under Morgan with Jones as the defensive coordinator.
Now Jones inherits a Lakeland program that has struggled recently, languishing at or near the bottom of the Southeastern District. Under previous head coach Kevin Knight, Lakeland had a win-loss record of 14-27 over the last four seasons.
There are hopes that Coach Jones can bring Oscar Smith’s winning ways to Lakeland. Time will certainly tell. If Jones can bring wining habits to the program and successfully comb the halls for athletes who might otherwise devote themselves completely to basketball or track, the Cavaliers may quickly find themselves back in the postseason.
