Oscar Smith continues to be loaded with talent, and the class of 2019 is no exception. The Tigers are coming off of three consecutive seasons where they’ve finished the season as the Class 6 runner up. They’ve had a different coach in each of those seasons. For the first time in T.J. Tucker’s high school career, he’ll have the same head coach leading the Oscar Smith program for two years in a row. Can his Tiger team make it four consecutive state championship game appearances and perhaps push their way over the top in December?
Heading into the regular season, we recognize the top 30 senior prospects in the 757. We’ve scoured the region for talent for almost ten years now, keeping an eye on the best of the best, but also looking for opportunities to connect athlete and high school programs with college coaches. Coming in as the 27th best senior prospect region-wide is Oscar Smith safety T.J. Tucker.

When speaking of a group his players at the beginning of the Spring, Oscar Smith Head Coach Scott Johnson included T.J. Tucker in the statement: ““All of those guys are very athletic with a strong tenacity to succeed.” Tucker had just received a scholarship offer from Morgan State.
By the end of June, Tucker committed to Morgan State. He made a trip up to Baltimore and committed on the Friday just before the dead period for VHSL programs was set to begin.
Coach Johnson is enthusiastic about what T.J. brings to the team. “He’s a real student of the game. He watches a lot of film and has a great instinct for the ball,” said the coach.
With his college commitment out of the way, T.J. can now focus on the upcoming season. As usual, the Tigers have a tall order for their opener. West Forsyth High School (NC) visits the Tigers on Saturday, August 25 in the next big opener for Oscar Smith. Pre-season camp started for Oscar Smith on Thursday, and the Tigers are now driven to perform on opening night as the first step in another run to the state championship.
