Recruit804 Fab 30: D’Vonte Waller QB Highland Springs
by Brandon Mitchell, recruit804
Highland Springs has been blessed over the last handful of years with spectacular quarterback play. In 2015 and 2016, Juwan Carter was able to lead the Springers to the promised land in helping bring home back-to-back Division 5B state championships. After the 2016 season, Carter traded in his Springers’ uniform for that of the Norfolk State Spartans and has been a vital part of the development of their offense. Taking over at the start of the 2017 season was D’Vonte Waller in which was not a name talked about prior to the start of the regular season. At any rate, Waller stood tough behind center helping lead the Springers to their third-consecutive state title.
Heading into the regular season, we recognize the top 30 senior prospects in and around the city of Richmond. Continuing our countdown as the 28th best senior prospect region-wide is Highland Springs starting quarterback D’Vonte Waller.
#28 D’Vonte Waller (2019 QB 6-2 175) – Highland Springs High School
All eyes were on David Laney from the outside looking in throughout the summer last year. It wasn’t until Highland Springs visited Randolph Macon College for a scrimmage against North Stafford that we started to hear word that there was a new arm in camp. Since then, the stock for D’Vonte Waller has been on a continual upswing. Not only was last year Waller’s first season starting behind center, it also just so happened to be a breakout season for the Springers’ prospect.
Waller finished the season last year with 2,700 passing yards and 26 touchdowns. He was able to notch All-804 third-team and All-Metro honorable mention recognition after opening up with relative ease throughout regular and post-season play. Waller was finally able to break the recruiting threshold in May when he picked up his first offer from Saint Augustine University. He was then able to follow that up in June with his second offer coming from the CIAA champs in Virginia State University.
