by Andy Hilton, recruitNoVA
Our #20 athlete came into the 2017 season with a chip on his shoulder. He proved himself by averaging well over 100 yards rushing per game for 15 games, leading his team to their third straight state championship at the highest level of football in Virginia.
Heading into the regular season, we recognize the top 30 senior prospects in all of Northern Virginia. That’s a tall task, considering that we track the talent at 86 high school programs in the region. Coming into our countdown as the #20 senior prospect region-wide is Westfield running back Eugene Asante.
#20 Eugene Asante (2019 RB 6-1 213) – Westfield High School
Asante was selected as our recruitNoVA Player of the Year in 2017 for his resilience under duress and for dominant performance week in and week out as he rushed for 1,866 yards last season. His performance drove Westfield to the Class 6 state championship. In the title game, Asante came through once again with a 109-yard, two touchdown effort in the championship win over Oscar Smith. Eugene dedicated his junior season to his cousin Samuel Kwarteng, a graduate of Mount Vernon High School and a 20-year-old student at VCU when he was slain in Richmond.
You can read more on his dedication in our recap of his junior season.
At 6’1” and 213 pounds, with 4.59 speed, Asante is a power house. His first scholarship offer came from Howard at the beginning of the year. Since then, other offers have come in, including New Hampshire, Towson, Morgan State, Sacred Heart and Delaware State.
