Class 6 has a slew of significant games in the opening round, and if you’re keeping track, Centreville (4-6) and Western Branch (4-6) are the only teams in the draw with a losing record. C.D. Hylton made it into the Region B playoff with a 5-5 record, Robinson made it into the Region C playoff at 5-5 and Wakefield is in Region D at 5-5 while Cosby and Grassfield made it into the Region A playoff at 5-5. Region A had only 11 teams.
Remember, Region A is the only region with teams outside of Northern Virginia. The latest re-classification has the other three regions filled with Northern Virginia teams, so there will be at least one NoVA team in the state championship. If the Region 6B champion beats the Region 6A champion in the state semifinal, the State Championship game for Class 6 will pit two Northern Virginia teams against each other for the title.
Teams that are paired off will see the winners face each other in the region semifinal with the higher seeded winner playing as the home team.
Most games in the opening round should be played at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, but game dates and times are TBA.
#8 Western Branch (4-6) at #1 Oscar Smith (9-1)
#5 Franklin County (6-4) at #4 Landstown (7-3)
#6 Grassfield (5-5) at #3 Thomas Dale (7-3)
#7 Cosby (5-5) at #2 Ocean Lakes (7-3)
BEST FIRST ROUND GAME: #5 Franklin County at #4 Landstown. It’s country boys vs. city boys in a game where the two teams have never met before.
WORST FIRST ROUND GAME: #8 Western Branch at #1 Oscar Smith. We’ve seen this one already. Oscar Smith won 56-14 on October 4.
#8 John Champe (6-4) at #1 Freedom-PW (10-0)
#5 Stonewall Jackson-M (8-2) at #4 Massaponax (8-2)
#6 Gar-Field (7-3) at #3 Colonial Forge (8-2)
#7 C.D. Hylton (5-5) at #2 Patriot (9-1)
BEST FIRST ROUND GAME: #5 Stonewall at #4 Massaponax. These two had regular season tilts in 2015 and 2016. Ponax won by a combined 90-13. This is a different Stonewall team, ready for payback.
WORST FIRST ROUND GAME: #7 Hylton at #2 Patriot. Hylton has won four of the last six meetings, but Patriot slayed the Bulldogs 42-14 on September 27.
#8 Falls Church (6-4) at #1 South County (10-0)
#5 T.C. Willams (7-3) at #4 West Springfield (6-4)
#6 James Robinson (5-5) at #3 Lake Braddock (8-2)
#7 Justice (6-4) at #2 Mount Vernon (9-1)
BEST FIRST ROUND GAME: #6 Robinson at #3 Lake Braddock. Robinson should feel like they have a chance against Lake Braddock. Yes, Lake Braddock prevailed in their regular season meeting 42-27, but the pair dueled to a 14-13 margin in the fourth quarter of that one.
WORST FIRST ROUND GAME: #8 Falls Church at #1 South County. This Falls Church team comes in on a three game losing streak. Their six wins are against teams with a combined 12-48 W-L record including three teams that finished the season 0-10.
#8 Wakefield (5-5) at #1 Westfield (10-0)
#5 South Lakes (6-4) at #4 Chantilly (8-2)
#6 George Marshall (6-4) at #3 Yorktown (9-1)
#7 Centreville (4-6) at #2 James Madison (7-3)
BEST FIRST ROUND GAME: #5 South Lakes at #4 Chantilly. Chantilly went 2-2 in the last month. South Lakes won three of four to finish the season including a 54-6 thumping of Herndon.
WORST FIRST ROUND GAME: #8 Wakefield at #1 Westfield. The Bulldogs are simply superior.
