VIRGINIA BEACH – Quin Blanding’s 56 yard touchdown run with 9:20 to play in the 3rd quarter proved to be the game-winning score in a critical Marlins victory.
Bayside (5-4), with the win, continues to tighten up the race in 6A South in defeating Cox (5-4) who compiled 100+ yards rushing from both Tommy McKee and Mike DeMasi.
Blanding scored out of the Wildcat formation with a run up the right side two plays and 53 seconds after Cox took a 14-13 lead out of the locker room. DeMasi capped a 4 play, 80 yard drive with a 38-yard scamper, his second of the night to put the Falcons temporarily in front.
In the first half, the Falcons capitalized on an opening fumble by the Marlins on a failed reverse when DeMasi scored on the run from 13 yards out.
Bayside, after failing to convert on a first quarter field goal, took a 13-7 lead with touchdown runs by Daryl Sills and Anthony Christman.
Cox, who came up just short on its last second field goal try before halftime, exercised drives of 16 and 8 plays late, respectively. Six total second half fumbles proved costly for the Falcons including two lost in Bayside territory, the second coming on a 1st and goal from the 9 with 2:40 to play.
Sills produced 112 yards on the ground in 18 carries as the Marlins churned out over nine yards per carry in the win.
