Running back Demonte Dunlap (2021 RB 5-8 170) was a rising force in the Norcom backfield for three seasons.
Now a senior, Dunlap has made a change of address.
For his final year of high school football, he’ll be a Maury Commodore. In addition to breaking into a new team, he added a new college offer this week when Coach Bobby Rome and Central State (Ohio) offered.
“Coach Rome and the staff called me today while I was at practice. We talked a few minutes about his history and what he has done in the past. We talked about his plans for me in the future. He said he’s been watching me for a while and been wanting to pull the trigger on me for a while now,” Dunlap stated.
Bobby Rome has a deep football history in the 757, graduating from Granby and playing his college ball at UNC. His first college head coaching gig was a turnaround project at Virginia University – Lynchburg. Earlier this year he took the head coaching position at Central State and is settling in by prioritizing his recruiting class of 2021.
As for Dunlap, he’s settling in by establishing his role with the Commodores. He’s still competing in the Eastern District, but it’s across the water in Norfolk.
“The adjustment was smooth. Here at Maury it’s more about the little things being done the correct way at the correct time. I was prepared months before I even came to Maury so it wasn’t hard,” Demonte said. “As far as learning the system, Coach McCain and Coach Rio helped me out a lot and walked me through so now we’re preparing for the bigger teams we will face in the future.”
“I want to lead this team to back-to-back state championships.”
Demonte was a Second Team All-Region 3A selection at running back in his junior season.
Dunlap’s recruitment is just getting started and he expressed an interest in working hard through his senior season so that he can finish strong.
