Specialists don’t get enough love.
They’re the punters, kickers, and long snappers. They’re the guys you don’t notice much until they’re not doing their job well. Often the ones to take the blame and not often the ones to get the credit for the points they put on the board or the field position flips they can execute.
Maury kicker and punter Luca Weber (2021 P/K 6-1 175) got a workout last year as his Commodore team racked up points. He was the one to put the finishing touch on plenty of touchdowns in 2019.
Over the weekend, Weber picked up his first offer when Howard came calling, and he reported the news to recruit757.
“It feels amazing (to get the offer from Howard) after everything that’s happened with corona and camps getting canceled. Getting a spot at a school is such a relief,” Luca stated. “I’m definitely excited to see how things play out.”
Luca cautioned that the offer was for a partial scholarship (50%), which is still significant considering that most specialists are expected to walk on and earn their scholarship money, even at the biggest schools in the nation.
“They want me to come in and compete for the punting job,” Luca added.
As for his off-season work, he has stayed busy, even though the team has barely had the opportunity for organized workouts.
“I’m just staying flexible and in tune with my drop. I’m doing drill work throughout the week,” he said.
In addition to the new offer from Howard, Weber commented that he’s also hearing from James Madison and Norfolk State.
“They’ve kept me up to date on what position they are in and how I could possibly help them,” Weber commented.
More opportunities are likely to come for the prolific kicker and punter. The first is the toughest to come by, and he’s now over that hump.
