Class 6 Region Finals
Region 6A Final: Oscar Smith 29, Thomas Dale 7
Oscar Smith put up a 15-0 halftime lead and continued to roll in the second half before Thomas Dale got on the board late in the game. The Tigers limited Thomas Dale to 32 yards of offense in the first half and 139 total. Romon Copeland led Smith with three touchdowns and 131 yards rushing and receiving.
Region 6B Final: Colonial Forge 42, Massaponax 21
The Eagles were carried by three tailbacks who split the production in a runaway win over Massaponax. Linebacker/running back Max Kauthen had 11 carries for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Jaelan Black had 11 carries for 135 yards and two scores. Jordan Barnett chipped in two carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. His 45-yard touchdown run closed the scoring for the night.
Massaponax quarterback Luke Morley was knocked out of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter. He rushed for 14 yards and first down, but suffered an ankle injury and was on crutches for the remainder of the contest.
The Colonial Forge win sets up a rematch with Oscar Smith next week, to be played at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake. The two teams have faced off four times (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017) and Oscar Smith has won all four contests, including the latest game in 2017 at Colonial Forge when as a junior, UNC athlete Cam Kelly sparked a comeback when he took over as the quarterback for the Tigers in a 27-20 win.
Region 6C Final: South County 31, Lake Braddock 15
While neither team had success running the ball, South County’s big plays in the passing game were the difference maker. Lake Braddock gained just 73 yards on 41 carries, while the Stallions garnered 85 on 30 carries. South County reeled off 31 unanswered points, led by quarterback Matt Dzierski. Dzierski was nearly perfect on the day, completing 18 of 22 passes for 311 yards, including three long touchdown tosses to Brock Spalding (seven catches, 171 yards).
Lake Braddock quarterback Billy Edwards (10 for 23 passing, 122 yards, 2 INT) ended up on the ground for more than half of the Bruin plays, his counterpart found time to throw, and took advantage of the time in the pocket. Another 56-yard completion was nullified by a lost fumble, but Dzierski found receivers at will, while Edwards ran to avoid defenders almost every time he dropped back.
With the win, South County heads to the Class 6 State Semifinal where they will meet the winner of Westfield vs. Yorktown, which will be played on Saturday.
Region 6D Final: #3 Yorktown (11-1) at #1 Westfield (12-0), 1:00 p.m. Saturday
Westfield comes in as the top ranked team in their region, led by quarterback Noah Kim, who is committed to Michigan State.
Class 5 Region Finals
Region 5A Final: Maury 35, Salem 14
The game was a hot contest into the fourth quarter until Maury pulled away with two late scores. Salem running back Kaelon Black punched forward for a Sun Devil first down inside the Maury ten on the first play of the fourth quarter, but left the game with a lower leg injury. Salem scored on that drive with a 17-yd TD pass from Saquan Miles to ODU commit Amorie Morrison.
Maury added insurance scores with a Keandre Lambert 37-yd TD run on a keeper with 4:14 left in the game. The Maury defense added the final touchdown when lineman Darian Varner stripped the ball from Miles and Dae Dae Evans scooped and scored from 30 yards out.
Region 5B Final: #4 Varina (10-2) at #2 Manchester (11-1), 1:00 p.m. Saturday
Varina and Manchester kicked off the 2019 regular season in dramatic fashion. Varina lead 28-17 at the half, but Manchester was able to claw their way back into the game and eventually prevailed 45-38 in double overtime.
If Manchester wins, Maury will travel to play the Lancers next week. If Varina wins, the Blue Devils will meet Maury at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.
Region 5C Final: Stone Bridge 57, Woodgrove 15
The Bulldogs had their way with Woodgrove in the second half to create a blowout in the regional final.
Stone Bridge led 22-15 at halftime and scored 35 unanswered second half points against last year’s Class 4 state champions.
The win sets up Stone Bridge for a Class 5 State Semifinal game against either Mountain View (10-2) or North Stafford (8-4). Those two teams play Saturday at Noon at Mountain View.
Region 5D Final: #2 North Stafford (8-4) at #1 Mountain View (10-2) Noon Saturday
Mountain View won the mid-season meeting between the two teams by a score of 34-26.
The Wolverines have benefited from the return of defensive back/wide receiver Shawn Asbury and they claim the top quarterback and wide receiver combo in the region. Jamir Boyd is 185 for 298 passing for 2,781 yards and 28 touchdowns against 9 INT. Wide out Holt Egan has 54 catches for 933 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Mountain View quarterback Edward Ware is 70 for 125 passing on the season for 954 yards with 14 touchdowns and 5 INT.

The Truckers battled well in the first half, but 27 unanswered points from late in the second quarter to late in the fourth quarter. Churchland ended that run with a 60-yard touchdown run by Marcus Cutler on the last play of the game.
Lake Taylor quarterback Jeff Foster was 9 for 16 passing for 158 yards with one touchdown run and three touchdown passes in the win.
The Titans will host Region 4B champion Patrick Henry-Ashland next weekend.
Region 4B Final: Patrick Henry 13, Dinwiddie 6

With the score tied at 6-6 in the fourth quarter, Patrick Henry athlete Jordan Allen took a direct snap and plunged into the end zone for the game winning score. Patrick Henry punted with 2:30 left in the game that put the ball in Dinwiddie’s hands for one more possession. The Patriots sealed the win with a Zeik Williams interception in the final minute.
With the win, Patrick Henry advances to the Class 4 State Semifinal where they will visit Lake Taylor next weekend.
Region 4C Final: Tuscarora 30, Broad Run 7
The Huskies shut down Broad Run and Ethan Gick led his team with four touchdowns passes (three in the first half) for a convincing win. Tuscarora led 20-7 at the half and cruised to the win, avenging a narrow 28-26 loss in the first week of the season.
Tuscarora will travel to Salem (Salem) for a Class 4 State Semifinal next Saturday at 2 p.m.
Region 4D Final: Salem 35, E.C. Glass 24

Isaiah Persinger scored an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter, his fourth TD of the game, on a 13-yard run. Persinger had 12 carries for 164 yards in the win.
Salem will host Tuscarora next weekend in a Class 4 State Semifinal.
