In late May, Surry County senior shooting guard Bre’cha Byrd made her college commitment.
She’ll head to St. Augustine’s after a storied high school career.
Byrd earned four All-State and four All-Region selections in her high school career. She was a two-time Region Player of the Year. Bre’cha led the Cougars to three state championships in her four years at Surry County and she scored 1625 points in that span. Her landmark 1,000th point scored came in her junior season.
“The environment at SAU felt like my home away from home. I have a really great relationship with the coaches. Coach Jones, Coach Woodard and Coach Johnson were very transparent about me being an impact player immediately,” Bre’cha said. “I visited in February. My ultimate goal is to perform. I’m not focused on starting. I am focused on being a game changer. My time will come. I will continue to work hard and trust God.”
Byrd closed out her high school career with a shared state championship due to the cancellation of the championship game right at the beginning of the Coronavirus shut down. In her senior season, Byrd was the Tri-Rivers District Player of the Year, Region 1B Player of the Year and VHSL Class 1 Athlete of the Year. She was selected as a First Team All-District, First Team All-Region and First Team All-State athlete each of the past three seasons.
“I give all the glory and honor to God for blessing me everyday.”
