At the end of the football season, the Hoos were left without a winning record and without a bowl game. Head Coach Mike London cleaned house. Today, the athletic department revealed a quartet of new coaching hires and the promotion of Cornerbacks Coach Chip West. West recruits the 757 for UVA and his promotion reinforces the value of the region to recruiting at the University.
It’s the season for All-American Bowls and Combines, and one of the biggest events in the land is the U.S. Army All-American Game in San Antonio, Texas. While the game is for graduating seniors, most of whom have already made a college commitment, the best of the junior class competes in combine activities to showcase their skills and qualify for a slot in next year’s game.
We’ve added another group of talented local players from The 757. Postseason awards came out in bunches over the past month, so we’ve taken the time to catch up on some of the players that were honored but hadn’t been in our database yet. Below are over 40 players that we’ve added to the recruit757 database in the past week or so.
For the South team, the highlight of Saturday’s Chesapeake Bowl All-Star Game was a drive carried mostly by Deion Stitt and Taquan Mizzell of Bayside High School. Unfortunately for the squad made up of players from Virginia, West Virginia, D.C., and Maryland, that bright spot came at the beginning at the game.
The third annual Chesapeake Bowl kicks off this afternoon at Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Prince George’s County Maryland. Nine 757 players are on board, and several have been making a lot of noise in this week’s practices leading up to the game.
While this is the time of year for seniors to begin wrapping up their recruitment, Phoebus High School has a sophomore lineman that’s shining brightly. His freshman season put him on the radar and a successful sophomore campaign is only going to add to the notice that he gains this spring. Harry Lewis is an All-Region lineman already. He’s picked up a few offers and there’s sure to be more to come.
Once you get down to picking the best of the Sophomore and Freshman classes, some of the selections are very obvious. Then the other selections are often picked from young players that got an early opportunity. There are few Jaason Lewis, Deshawn McClease and Nhyre Quinerly-type players out there. There are far more teams that are rebuilding and relying on young players to do it.
Phoebus football had a good year. They didn’t get their fifth straight state championship win, but they had a 12-1 season that only ended when the Phantoms fell in the Division 5 Eastern Region Title Game. New head coach Jeremy Blunt led the team to an undefeated regular season, and now he’s leading the recruiting effort for the remainder of his seniors that haven’t committed for college yet.
There are some excellent athletes in the 2014 class, and the cream certainly rises to the top. Quin Blanding and Jalyn Holmes are obvious picks for players of the year. In fact, the two players could be interchangeable when it comes to winning offensive or defensive awards.
