It was a game that no one wanted to lose. In the end, the Woodside Wolverines outlasted the Warwick Raiders, moving on to a 2-1 record while the Raiders fell to an unexpected 0-3. The loss now puts the Raiders in a hole if they’re going to make the playoffs.
The Phoebus Phantoms did what they do best on Thursday nights… win. Coach Stan Sexton’s team wasn’t flawless, but they didn’t need to be. After three quarters, the Phantoms had generated all of the offense and points that they needed for a convincing victory.
Tonight is light in terms of football in The 757, but there are a couple of interesting Peninsula District matchups that will give us a better idea of who’s truly on top of the district as we head toward the mid-point of the season. In Hampton, we have an interesting battle between two coaches that are very familiar with each other. At Todd Stadium, two Newport News schools face off in a game that might determine who’s the best team in the city.

ACC officials announced this morning that the conference is adding Notre Dame as the 15th member of the conference, expanding the league’s footprint and bringing a national presence to the league that’s been purely coastal up to this point. Football is not officially part of the equation, but ACC football schedules will have a lot of Notre Dame presence, and that’s good for the conference as a whole.
Western Branch running back Josh Marriner lit up the Deep Creek Hornets on Friday night, rushing 261 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns in a 60-12 win. The Bruins are 2-0 on the season already, and Marriner has had a key role in his team’s success so far this season.
Bethel Safety Nicholas Clark is seeing his recruitment heat up. He just recently added a new offer, and he was able to squeeze in a college visit this past weekend that allowed him to see two teams that pique his interest. What’s the latest with the Bruin?
Congratulations to this week’s Freedom Ford Player of the Week, Brice Tucker of Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School. In the fan voting, Tucker narrowly edged Bayside running back Taquan Mizell. All of the nominees had astounding performances last week, but Tucker took the prize with his performance in an impressive win over Portsmouth Christian.
The Virginia Cavaliers had an impressive day on Saturday. The play on the field was good enough to top visiting Penn State by a score of 17-16. More impressive by recruiting standards was the host of local players that visited Charlottesville for a taste of Hoo football. The 757 was well represented in the stands, and that bodes well for the football future at UVA.
