Tychaun “Doc” Chapman makes an early verbal commitment to Carolina

He didn’t have to do it, but Tychaun Chapman made his verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina early.
The Class of 2022 running back and slot receiver ended his recruitment after pulling in double-digit scholarship offers, including schools in the SEC and Big Ten, among others.
Florida State, Alabama, Maryland, UNC and Penn State made Chapman’s Top Five list that he shared a month ago.
Chapel Hill reeled him in.

Chapman’s commitment to North Carolina may not be seen as much of a surprise. Defensive backs coach Dre Bly has made an investment in recruiting his hometown with his first major recruiting win coming earlier this year when Tychaun’s teammate, Tony Grimes, committed to the Tar Heels. Grimes was ranked as the #1 defensive back in the nation for the recruiting class of 2021, and Tony escalated his time frame by graduating early and enrolling as a member of the 2020 recruiting class.
Bly played his high school ball at Western Branch High School (Chesapeake) before moving on to UNC and the NFL.
That move helped Grimes avoid sitting out his senior season of high school ball, and he made it onto the field as a key member of the Tar Heel secondary this season.
As for Chapman, he’s kept himself sharp with training, conditioning and 7-on-7. There’s a lot of time between now and the Fall of 2022 when “Doc” could hit the field for Carolina, but the relationship between Coach Bly, Tony Grimes and Chapman should cement the commitment over that span.
Chapman’s earliest opportunity to sign with the Tar Heels comes with the early signing period in December 2021.
