Grassfield won their season finale against rival Great Bridge last weekend and their reward is a first-round postseason matchup with rival Oscar Smith.
The Grizzlies played the Tigers two weeks ago and lost by a score of 48-0. Smith demolished all opponents in a five-game season by a grand total of 284-6. The only points they have allowed came last week against Indian River in a 66-6 win.
Overall, Oscar Smith is 18-0 all-time against the Grizzlies including a few postseason meetings between the two teams.
The Tigers are extremely deep this year, with players on the second string who might star for other teams in the region.
Junior quarterback Ethan Vasko has been red hot this season, contributing to scores on the ground and through the air. At running back Kevon King, Tyvon Norfleet, and Devante Cooper share the load. The receivers corps is multi-talented and varied, featuring Kole Jones and Amonte Jones. The defense and special teams are just as likely to put points up on the scoreboard. Against Deep Creek, Sherrod Covil had two pick-sixes. That game could have been even more lopsided considering that the Tigers had a punt block for a touchdown and a kickoff return for a touchdown called back due to penalties.
For Smith, this game might act as a tune-up for a Thomas Dale team who faces off against #3 seeded Franklin County (4-2) Thursday night. The Knights are also undefeated this season. Neither team can go into tonight looking forward to next week.
Oscar Smith head coach Chris Scott is well known for saying, “We’re looking to go 1-0 every week.”
