Hermitage K Alex Burton will join Old Dominion as a preferred walk-on

Hermitage starting kicker Alex Burton was afforded the opportunity to have many collegiate programs look in his direction as we wind down to National Signing Day. VMI showed major interest all the way through his final visit on January 28 as it decided to offer Burton a position as a preferred walk-on. Virginia State University took a hard look at the Hermitage product becoming the third program to send Burton offer. Shaw came into the picture in early December, but became overshadowed by the amount of attention Burton started to receive afterward.
Then there’s Old Dominion.
The Monarchs were searching the open market for a specialist that has the ability to put the ball through the goal post at an efficient rate and maybe even sometimes drop a punt inside the 10-yard line. Look no further than Alex Burton.
“I started talking to them about a year ago and I visited a few times in the spring,” Burton stated. “They’ve recruited me the most out of anybody in the past year. I went to camp during the summer and showed them some good stuff. We kept in contact through the season and things started picking up more this month.”
Despite just being a preferred walk-on shot at the Monarchs roster, the financial burden that comes with it is something that isn’t weighing on the mind of Burton should he not earn a full scholarship.
“Words can’t explain how excited we are, this was always the goal though. I have to take it from here and keep getting better. I know it’s a preferred walk on, but I’ve got a pretty good financial aid package from them and an academic scholarship,” Burton said.
Alex is just one of many prospects for the Panthers prepared to signing National Letters of Intent this Wednesday including Landon Jones who committed to Virginia Union University on February 3.
