Hopewell lineman Landen Baker (2021 OL 6-2 350) and Shamari Mason (2021 DE 5-11 225) announced their college decisions late last week. Baker will be taking his talents to Campbell, who competes at the Division I FCS level, while Mason will head to The College of Wooster, a Division III school located in Wooster, Ohio.
Baker chose Campbell over offers from Saint Andrews University, Virginia State, Bluefield College, and West Virginia State to name a few. When asked about his commitment, he stated, “It feels great to have this decision out of the way. I feel like I can focus more on my team and winning another state championship. I’m excited about the coaches and the atmosphere at Campbell. It just felt like home when I went down there to visit.”

He continued, “The coaching staff likes how physical I am and that I have solid footwork for the size that I am. I’m looking forward to showing the coaches and my future teammates how good I am and I look forward to competing for a starting position. Just got to work hard and prove myself.”
Landon garnered First Team All-Region 3A and Second Team All-State honors in 2019.
Teammate Shamari Mason held offers from local ODAC schools Randolph Macon, Hampden-Sydney, and Bridgewater, but chose The College of Wooster in order to get a change of scenery. “I just wanted to see what else was out there. There isn’t anything wrong with Virginia, I love it here. I just wanted a different chance to experience more than I already had.”

He continued, “I was recruited to The College of Wooster by Coach Kooser. He believes that with my speed and IQ, I will fit nicely into their program. I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life and I intend on majoring in Biology.”
Mason currently holds a 3.8 GPA and will graduate high school with an Associate’s degree in hand.
Hopewell is 2-1 and will be back in action Friday against Matoaca. If the Blue Devils win, they will likely snag the #4 seed in Region 3A.
