We’ve watched Joey Kagel develop since the start of his high school career at Kellam High School. He transferred to Catholic High School in the Chris Scott era, and he’s now following his dream of playing college football.
On Monday, Kagel picked up a preferred walk on opportunity from the University of Virginia and it didn’t take long for Joey to act on it.
“After a long recruiting process, I had a great Zoom meeting today with Coach Tujague and he gave me the offer. I am honored to commit to such an amazing school and football program. My family and I know that UVA is the best fit for me. I am truly grateful and excited for the opportunity,” Joey explained.
I am truly blessed and honored to announce that I have committed to play football at the University of Virginia as a PWO!βοΈπΆπ·πΆβοΈ @UVACoachBronco @Coach2J @CoachBWolfe @theCRUathletics @TAFootbal @HarlowjohnH @Recruit757 #THEStandard21 #GoHoos pic.twitter.com/RB1d7VfUQb

We’ve seen Kagel at multiple camps over the years, including our invite only recruit757 Sparta Showcase at Redskins Park, and the Clash of the Titans Showcase this summer in Richmond.
He earned offers from several Ivy League schools, but the PWO from Virginia broke through and made sense for him and his family.
“I have been talking with Coach Tujague for a while and loved all that UVA had to offer,” Kagel said.
There’s still the promise of a spring season for Bishop Sullivan and Joey plans to be there for every bit of it.
“I am looking forward to playing my senior season at Catholic High School. I am very excited to head up to Charlottesville after graduating,” Kagel explained.
There was additional news out of Catholic as head football coach Tommy Austin, who has been on leave for health concerns, announced that he would remain on leave for the spring football season. Austin plans to return to coaching at Catholic High School. Interim head coach John Harlow has been managing the program since the start of the school year and he will coach the Crusaders for the upcoming season.
