DetailsSay farewell to the districts. They officially went away last month. 2013-14 marks the first year of a new era within the VHSL. Schools will now belong to a conference, and play in a fully bracketed playoff at the state level once the postseason arrives. To keep confusion to a minium, all teams kept their former district schedules intact, and only added new out-of-district games as necessary. That means the schedule for the former Beach District teams didn’t change at all, while other teams made a few adjustments to account for their new division level.
DetailsVirginia Tech loses a key player, but the end result means more opportunities for Oscar Smith grad J.C. Coleman and First Colonial’s Tony Gregory. On Tuesday, Virginia Tech officials acknowledged that Hokie running back Michael Holmes had been dismissed from the school after he was found guilty of a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery.
DetailsOn Monday night, a little over 100 sports fans gathered together for the Chesapeake Sports Club’s July meeting to hear the high school football coaches of Chesapeake talk about their programs and their philosophies of coaching the young men of the city. It was a great opportunity to get a preview of the season, and a look into the lives of the coaches that mold our young men.
DetailsLittle mystery is left for the Urquharts on National Signing Day 2014. Cornell Urquhart is the latest 2014 804 athlete to commit. The 6-4, 255 defensive end from Benedictine has verbally committed to play football at James Madison University in the fall of 2014. Cornell brings an impressive combination of size and athleticism to the defensive end position for the Dukes. He has the uncanny ability to disrupt plays before they begin and the speed to chase done ball carriers from behind.
DetailsGrafton went through quite a quarterback conundrum last year. Senior Jett Johnson was supposed to be the answer, but he broke his leg in a September game against Bruton. Back-up quarterback P.J. Jackson struggled, and also went down to injury. That put then sophomore third-stringer Evan Sperling into the signal caller’s role, where he led the Clippers to a late run of wins and a playoff appearance. Sperling might be the answer for the fall of 2013, but his days of playing quarterback are numbered.
DetailsIt’s a dead week in the VHSL, meaning that no athletes are formally practicing, no coaches are coaching, and facilities are quiet. All except for the graduating seniors that are celebrating their successful high school athletic careers with a VHSCA All-Star Game. All week long in Hampton, the state’s top Class of 2013 athletes are competing in Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, Baseball, and Football. The Football All-Star game caps the week on Friday night at Darling Stadium. Here’s a look at the rosters.
DetailsPhoebus has a lot of talent. One of the unsung heroes of the offensive and defensive line is Jamal Earls (SR OL 6-3 245). The big man has the size, skill, and pedigree to earn a college offer. So far, his camp exploits have gotten him a lot of interest, but no offers. He’s determined that his time will come.
DetailsThe VHSL’s new classification system starts this fall, and not everyone’s thrilled about it. Some teams move to new classifications, there are no more districts or regions, and all teams are thrown into a 32 team bracket at the end of the season to determine a state champion at every division level. Locally, everyone has maintained their previous district schedules, but that leaves some teams in smaller districts scrambling for games to fill out their regular season schedule.
