Ricky Walker has been on the recruiting radar since his freshman season when he premiered as an imposing six foot, 250 pound ninth grader. Walker has rounded out and matured since then, making him one of the most game experienced and sharpest high level prospects in the region.

Virginia Tech can celebrate lots of successes from National Signing Day. The staff experienced a big shake up after a 6-6 regular season. The staff wasn’t solidified until January, yet every verbal commitment stuck, giving Tech one of their best recruiting classes in recent years.

($$) Oscar Smith defensive end Andrew Brown has attracted more than his share of recruiting attention from college coaches. Being 6-5 290 with strong hands, strong footwork, and the ability to run like a deer will do that for you. Brown had more than 30 college scholarship offers coming into the new year and he’s decided now to narrow his list.

National Signing Day was a day of celebration for local players and coaches. For college coaches, it was a time to inventory their haul after confirming signings. Some colleges made huge strides in establishing or continuing their presence in The 757. Other colleges fell off the pace. Still others have work to do if they’re going to be considered as contenders for local talent.

Ocean Lakes quarterback Corwin Cutler can rest easy now. He has perhaps had a little too much inactivity since falling to a knee injury in the Dolphins’ first playoff game last fall. His rehab is going well. Now that his signing with the Cavaliers is official, he can focus on getting ready for college, and getting ready to be a college quarterback.

Specifically, the Hokies talent grab in The 757 was anchored by the commitments of quarterback Bucky Hodges and linebacker Andrew Motuapuaka. Sure, Parker Osterloh, Charles Clark, and Deon Newsome inked with Tech as well, but the Hokies made a statement when they nabbed two of the Best at the Beach.

Of all the recruits in The 757, Great Bridge lineman Garrett Watts is probably headed the furthest from home. On Wednesday, Watts signed his letter of intent to play football at Air Force. Soon, he’ll head off to the Academy in his quest to become an officer.

For the Bayside players moving on to play college football, it was a signing class of one on Wednesday. By the measure of talent, the class was huge, and shouldered exclusively by Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell. New Head Coach Jon White insists that there’s more to come. In the meantime, we can savor the sight of yet another Bayside Marlin moving on to play ACC Football.
