The weather could not stop 150 athletes from participating in this past weekend’s National Underclassmen Combine (NUC) at Highland Springs High School in Richmond, Virginia. Hosted by the Springers, this year’s NUC was a great start to the camp and combine season.

Cox High School produces good football players. Athletic tight end and linebacker Adam Carroll led the Cox Falcons on both sides of the ball in his senior year. It took some time for him to determine his college destination, but now he’s made his pick.

($$) In a dramatic turn of events, Western Branch quarterback C.J. Thomas has flipped his commitment from Christopher Newport to Hampton University. There are no scholarships and no National Letter of Intent to play at the Division III level, so Thomas was free to change his mind.

This is my favorite part of this entire information I’ve laid out to you because there are misconceptions that athletes have about what and verbal offer is and a committable offer. What a true commit is and what a verbal commit is. When does the recruiting process actually start and what can and cannot take place according to the NCAA. This is the truth or myth section. I understand that coaches talk. I talk to many of them every day and I know they have to be careful and very clear on what they say to students and to coaches. Let’s be clear, a verbal offer through a coach from a college or university coach when you are a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, is just that VERBAL

Cox lineman Jeremy Ramey is seeing his recruitment slowly heat up. Ramey has made a few college visits already, but his latest visit was his best yet. Jeremy is looking forward to more visits and is working hard to have a senior season where he can impress the college coaches that are looking to recruit him.

The Deep Creek Hornets made strides this year. They only picked up one win, but under new Head Coach Cal Copeland, that win was a step in the right direction. The underclassmen are already working on improvements to next year’s squad. In the meantime, the current seniors have been working out their college committments. In the case of senior lineman Ben Lounsbury, the big man now has it all worked out.

For those of you that feel you are a DI or DII recruit, then the following applies to you. If you want to participate in NCAA Division I or II football, you must also be certified as an amateur student-athlete. The NCAA Eligibility Center will determine the amateurism eligibility of all freshman and transfer-college bound student-athletes for initial participation at an D-I or D-II college or university.

When you have 4.2 Forty speed, it’s easy to predict a breakout. Grassfield running back Vincent Lowe has been able to boast about his track star speed for a couple of years now. His ball carrying skills (along with those of teammate Isaiah Harper) have led the Grizzlies to repeat playoff appearances. He can claim two college scholarship offers already, and there’s no doubt more are on the way.

The main truth is only .001 of the all high school athletes will go on to play Division I sports. If you don’t play D- I, it’s not the end of the world. There is great football at the D-II and D-III levels as well as NAIA. All of them have championships, and all of them go to their respective bowl games. Some D-II and D-III schools actually get more TV time than most D-I schools do. Most of them have Pro Days, and fact is, if you are good enough, no matter where you play you will be found.
