Alderson-Broaddus College continues to scoop up local talent and take them to West Virginia. The Battlers picked up two new players over the weekend when Clay Teets and Zach Templeton of Portsmouth Christian made the trip and came back committed.

($$) Lake Taylor athlete Jalyn Holmes continues to pick up scholarship offers. The Titan junior had an amazing junior season and led his team to the Division 5 State Championship. Holmes added a new offer late last week when an SEC school came calling. He’s also made a major change in his offer list.

($$) Ocean Lakes wide receiver Andre Dessenberg had a stellar season for the Ocean Lakes Dolphins. His production was astounding in a passing game that led the region in efficiency and scoring. Dessenberg finished the regular season with 63 catches for 872 yards and 18 touchdowns. Dre added to that total in five postseason games. He committed to Delaware back in September, but had a late change of heart.

($$) After being spurned by Maryland, Ocean Lakes lineman Demetri McGill was forced to re-open his recruitment. This was just a couple of weeks ago. Demetri settled on four schools to take official visits. By this past weekend, McGill narrowed the list to three after three visits. After time to think, McGill announced his intention Monday night.

Western Branch seniors seem to be a popular bunch. It looks like there’s a potential for as many as a dozen commitments to come out of the Chesapeake school. The most notable is running back Josh Marriner, who has committed to Connecticut. As we close in on National Signing Day, the Bruins have a new commitment to brag about.

($$) The region’s top recruit for 2014 and perhaps the region’s top linebacker for 2014 took the trip to South Carolina for a Clemson Junior Day on Saturday. Â The visit was a hit with the recruits, deepening Brown’s ties to the Tigers and putting Glover clearly on Clemson’s radar for the next recruiting class.

Amazingly, the Lake Taylor Titans’ state championship squad wasn’t loaded with seniors. The senior class is small, but valuable in the eyes of college coaches. The latest Titan to get his recruitment worked out will stay local, and he’ll get to play his college ball with a fellow Titan teammate from this year’s championship team.

When you’re playing for a private school, it’s sometimes hard to get noticed. When you’re 6-4 and 220, it’s hard to go unnoticed. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy quarterback Tim Burns hit the camps regularly last spring and summer, including stops at the NUC, Junior Rank, James Madison satellite camp, Wake Forest, and Coastal Carolina among others. After his senior season, more thought on the subject, and another visit, Coastal won out.

Christopher Newport University is quietly building another great recruiting class. In 2012, the Captains picked up close to twenty local commitments. For the 2013 class, they now have five, with more on the way.
