When it all came down to it, Cox and Granby won when they had to, but Granby held the advantage and made the playoffs. In Division 5, Nansemond River lost a nailbiter to Lakeland on Friday night, so Maury grabbed the #8 seed in spite of a loss to Granby on Saturday.

It was a finale week rivalry game that had more at stake for the Comets. At 8-1, Granby needed the win in order to make the playoff. The Comets came through, disappointing the Cox Falcons in the process.

The last game at Kellam’s Ammons field saw a record-breaking performance. Unfortunately, for the Knights, it was a fantastic night for the visiting Ocean Lakes Dolphins. Two of the highest regarded seniors in the region proved it Friday night with wide receiver Andre Dessenberg scoring six touchdowns, and quarterback Corwin Cutler breaking the school record for touchdown passes.

The defending champs were on the ropes. Oscar Smith had a 54 game district winning streak on the line, along with playoff seeding and pride. The Tigers were lethargic against King’s Fork for three quarters on Friday night. They managed to force overtime with seven seconds left, then had the guts to fend off the Bulldogs for the double overtime win.

It was a titanic match up in the Peninsula District. Phoebus had an undefeated season and a PD title on the line. Hampton wanted to top the Phantoms as they did last year, plus gain an advantage in the Division 5 playoff seeding. There were plenty of story lines, but none any bigger than simple pride.

We’re going into the final games for the season and this season’s rushing title seems to be wrapped up by Josh Marriner. Deion Stitt and Bayside have finished their regular season, so several quarterbacks have an opportunity to surpass his yardage totals with a good stat night tonight. Quin Blanding is in the same boat. It seems like he has the receiving yardage total wrapped up by far, but he’s sitting out this week, waiting for the postseason along with his Marlin teammates.
