Schedule Preview: Eastern District

Again, we’re going to go into this year treating the programs as though they’re playing a district schedule. The VHSL reclassified all high school programs earlier this year, and the new classifications are effective with the start of the new school year. In football, all teams generally agreed to keep their district schedules in order to make scheduling easier for the next two years. For the schools of the former Eastern District, that means seven games of “the usual” and three new games for the schedule. That has presented problems for two schools.

The Hampton Roads Academy Navigators did not have the season they looked for last year. With that being said, some things have changed and boy are they ready for this year. With the addition of former Portsmouth Christian coach, Josh Blalock as the offensive coordinator, the sky is the limit for this young HRA team. “This is a major change for us, especially filling the void at QB,” says Head Coach Bryce Kiser.

Scott Grabs First Official Offer

In summer camps, Gloucester athlete James Scott has been turning a lot of heads. He’s a well muscled 6-1 and 210 pounds. He shows well in a camp setting, and in his junior film, you can see how he carried his team to the few wins that they got last year. James is a fighter. Now that he’s picked up his first offer, he might not have to fight as hard for the second and third.

PCS is Young and Ready

The smell of the weight room was obvious as soon as the doors to the Portsmouth Christian football locker room opened. PCS is in their second year under head coach Marcus Cutler. The coach couldn’t stop talking about how much his players are getting focused early and developing leadership and strength. This is almost necessary considering the first four games of their schedule are Norfolk Christian, Isle of Wight, Bishop Sullivan, and Atlantic Shores.

Cox has been a school that’s been just on the verge of a breakout, football wise. They have a lot of great golfers and tennis players. They’ve won championships in a lot of different sports. They’re a school founded decades ago, but their first playoff appearance in Football came in 2008. Head Coach Bill Stachelski has his team ready to make a run that’s never happened before.
