For Menchville, the benefit of having a game under their belts didn’t play out. A week after losing to Maury 62-0, the Monarchs topped that futility by falling to Bethel 65-0. It wasn’t a matter of one-upsmanship. The Monarchs just couldn’t get it going on either side of the ball.

Norcom High School Friday night in a game that was the season opener for both teams, and both teams are coming off winning seasons. The obvious goal of starting off with a win was shared by both teams. This was Coach Bryan Potts of Lakeland first game as the new head coach. A win would set the tone for the rest of the season. On the other side of the ball, Coach Larry Archie wanted to win to continue the winning tradition that he has set up at IC Norcom. The duel was set and the game held high hopes for both teams.

The Windsor Dukes coaching staff has been together quite a few years now. They’ve seen some ups and downs. As a team they’ve been more experienced and even more talented. They’ve made it to the playoffs for two straight years only to lose in the first round. With many fresh young faces and not as much playing experience as in the past Coach Parrish has set a goal this year to win a play-off game. Coach Parrish looks forward to that by stating “our guys have made great strides, now we’ve got to go win that game.” In the Tri-Rivers district Windsor will have time to mature some and still get in the 2A East region playoffs but they’ll need to win an early game or two.

In an opening game pitting two playoff contenders against each other, Bayside and Landstown stood toe-to-toe for almost the entire four quarters of the game in a virtual stalemate. Both teams were struggling with sophomore quarterbacks at the helm. The Bayside defense stepped up and helped the Marlins sprint away at the finish.

The Lakeland Cavaliers have had two very successful seasons that past two years, and they look to continue the trend upward. First year coach Bryan Potts, comes to Lakeland from cross town rival Kings Fork where he was an assistant. Coach Potts has a tough task ahead of him as the Cavaliers lost one heck of a senior class. The offense and defense both took major hits personnel-wise, but the replacements are ready to make their presence known quickly.
