Massaponax High School placekicker Jonathan Kim (2019 K 6-1 180) had an impressive senior season.
The Massaponax Panthers practically ran the table in the regular season, going 9-1, before being knocked out of the playoffs in a revenge match against North Stafford.
Kim was key in the first game against North Stafford. Jonathan was 5 for 6 on extra points and nailed a 43-yard field goal in a 44-7 win.
His clutch kicking earned him plenty of attention and college opportunities from VMI, ODU, and Eastern Michigan.
After a weekend visit to the University of North Carolina, Kim was convinced that his college home should be with the Tar Heels.
“I loved everything. I know it sounds cliché, but from the academics and how the staff works to help their athletes keep good grades, to the coaching staff and how they treat their players, and the facilities, it was all just so outstanding,” Jonathan said.
Kim comes into the UNC Football program with the opportunity to win the kicking job as a true freshman.
Two-year starting kicker Freeman Jones played his senior season with the Tar Heels in 2018. That leaves two kickers on the roster and Jonathan Kim coming in to compete for the starter’s job this fall.
Jones was 31 for 31 on extra points in 2018, and he was 18 for 28 on field goals with a season long of 49 yards.
Kim routine put high school kick offs through and over the end zone, and on his successful 43-yard FG against North Stafford, Kim had the ball near the top of the uprights. He has plenty of leg to hit a 50-yard field goal.
At Massaponax, Jonathan Kim joins Teagan McDonald (ODU) and Donavan Beaver (WVU) as college bound football athletes from the recruiting class of 2019.
