The women’s basketball program at Old Dominion is off to a better start than it had in the beginning last season, but is still struggling.
Right now, the Lady Monarchs are 6-7 overall and are 1-1 in conference. During non-conference play, they lost to multiple teams including nationally ranked Miami, Syracuse, and Duke. ODU won its first game of conference play 59-47 at Rice, but then dropped the game at North Texas 65-55.
Turnovers seem to be plaguing ODU this season, as they have an average 18.1 turnovers a game so far along with most of their opponents having more steals. As a team, they have been outrebounding their opponents and scoring well with about 65.2 points a game.
Senior Jennie Simms is leading the team this year in scoring. She is averaging 24.2 points per game and is second in the NCAA for scoring. She is one of the five starters that ODU returned from last season.
Senior forward Destinee Young is averaging a double-double this year with 11 points and 11 rebounds per game. She recently had her 10th double-figure rebounding game of the season in their loss to North Texas.
The Lady Monarchs have a tough schedule lying ahead of them, as they have to face several teams that challenged them last year and beat them. Five of their next seven games are opponents that they lost to last year or have been beaten by this year.
ODU will play their next two games at home after coming off of a 5-game road trip. Their next game is against Marshall on Thursday at 7 p.m., and then they will take on Western Kentucky on Saturday at 4 p.m.
