New Kent’s football team is set to open the 2018 season Aug. 30 at Colonial Heights.
The season got off to a good start for one of the Trojans players as Dean Powell verbally committed to play at Old Dominion University.
“This means the absolute world to me,” Powell said. “I’m getting to live (out) my childhood dream.”
Powell has been a fixture on the Trojans varsity for the last four years. He started every game on the offensive and defensive lines and posted a team-best 62 tackles amongst New Kent linemen. He was a second-team, all-district selection the last two seasons.
The 6-foot-4, 270-pound rising senior is versatile and can play anywhere on the defensive front. He has a quick first step and is great in pursuit of the play. Powell is a sure tackler with a motor to get into the backfield and disrupt an offense.
This spring, Powell has been active on the recruiting scene and had interest from several other schools, including Colonial Athletic Association champion James Madison University and Coastal Carolina.
After some serious thought, he liked the opportunities Coach Bobby Wilder talked about with the Monarchs.
“The amount of love they showed me, and they are such a tight-knit group,” Powell said. They liked my size and speed, especially from the inside.”
On the field, Powell is expected to play defensive tackle at the next level as the Monarchs look to upgrade their pass rush.
In the classroom, he intends to pursue a career in the dental or medical field.
The combination of offerings from ODU in the classroom and as a scholarship athlete were unmatched by other schools.
“I separated them from the others by just how much love they give,” Powell said. I have a since of relief right now that I’ve made my decision.”
