The Salem Sun Devils have been a power program at the Beach for years.
You can go back through the years and find a lot of remarkable players and many remarkable seasons in the Sun Devil history book.
Tailback Kevin Whaley was a prolific runner, rolling up 6,310 rushing yards in his high school career before heading to the University of Minnesota in 2008.
Coach Robert Jackson had the Sun Devils rolling with multiple playoff runs until he stepped aside after the 2015 season. Jackson’s Salem teams were 11-3 in 2013 and 2014, losing in the state semifinal round to eventual state champions L.C. Bird in both seasons. His teams were 51-13 in his last five seasons as head coach.
Shawn Wilson came over from the Green Run football program and led the Sun Devils to a 40-15 record in five seasons including two Region 5A championship appearances.
Now Salem will look to continue their excellence with the hiring of Marcus Williams. Williams comes to the program after years of serving as an assistant coach under Tommy Reamon at Landstown.
“An accomplished teacher and coach, Williams fits the bill with Salem’s school vision & philosophy in preparing our youngsters for the future,” said Salem activities director Mark Harrison of the hire.
It won’t be long before Coach Williams will have the team back on the field again. 7-on-7 is right around the corner, along with college one-day camps. The arrival of two-a-days in August isn’t far away and the kickoff of the fall football season is about 16 weeks away.
