If Virginia Tech was hoping to revive the Frank Beamer era, they waited a little too long to tap Shane Beamer.
Current Hokie head coach Justin Fuente may be on the hot seat in Blacksburg. Some Tech fans have been buzzing about the possibility of Shane Beamer coming in to lead the program, but those rumors are dead now that the South Carolina Gamecocks have announced Shane as their new head coach.
“I have been preparing for this moment my entire life,” said Beamer in a press release by South Carolina athletics. “I am ready and excited to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina. I am thankful to all the head coaches that I have worked for, the assistant coaches and student-athletes I have worked with. My family and I are thrilled to be coming back to Columbia and the state of South Carolina.”
Beamer will leave his position as Assistant Head Coach for Offense, Tight Ends and H-Backs to return to South Carolina.
Shane Beamer was an assistant coach at South Carolina in the Steve Spurrier era. He left to join his dad’s coaching staff at Virginia Tech from early 2011 until Frank Beamer’s retirement in 2015. From there, he coached with Georgia and Oklahoma before landing the South Carolina job as his first head coaching gig.
“I believe that Shane Beamer is the perfect fit to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina,” said South Carolina Director of Athletics Ray Tanner. “He has worked under some of the greatest coaches in college football and has taken those lessons to become one of the bright, young minds in the game. I believe Shane’s energy, enthusiasm, commitment and fondness for our school and program will be met favorably by our student-athletes, staff and fans.”
South Carolina finished their 2020 season on Saturday with a 41-18 loss to Kentucky, which dropped the Gamecocks to 2-8 on the year.
The Oklahoma Sooners are 7-2 on the season and will finish next weekend with a road game against West Virginia (5-4).
