For this week’s Sportswrap/recruit757 Game of the Week, we turn our eye to the Peninsula and a match up with a lot of history involved. Heritage High School has only been open for a little more than a decade, but the storylines here are decades old.
George Massenburg played his high school ball at Hampton High School under Head Coach Mike Smith. Smith has been coaching the Hampton Crabbers for over 40 years, and the coach has brought up many players and coaches who’ve had an impact on the game locally, regionally, and nationally. Massenburg not only played for Smith, but he was an assistant coach at Hampton High until he got the job as head coach at Heritage just a couple of years ago.
In two meetings between the two schools since Massenburg took over, Hampton has won both times. This year, Heritage could turn the tables.
Massenburg learned the principles of the game and the principles of coaching from Mike Smith. Heritage is a traditional, run-first kind of team and they’ll rely on the legs of running back Juan’ye Patillo to carry them far. Patillo rushed for 179 yards and three touchdowns in last week’s win over Denbigh, and he contributed 125 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a rout over Wilson to open the season.
On the Crabber side of the football, you would think that the run game would be priority number one. It wasn’t last week, as Hampton chased Woodside up and down the field in an unbelievable 65-44 loss for Hampton. Quarterback Vonn Quillen threw for over 350 yards, rushed for another 86 yards and was in on five scores in that game. Quillen is electric as a converted wide receiver who’s taken over the quarterback role with the departure of Deon Newsome to Virginia Tech and Joe Addison, who transferred to Phoebus.
It’s a clash of styles and a coaching rivalry for this week’s game of the week. See our analysis of the game in the video window below, and check back with recruit757 and Friday Night Flights on WAVY TV 10 for a recap of tonight’s game and all other around the region.
