2021 Spring Season recruit757 Top Ten

This past weekend, we watched a Southeastern District battle of unbeaten teams between Deep Creek and Oscar Smith, a cross-town battle between Norview and Maury, and a decisive Peninsula District game between Woodside and Hampton. Several of the top ten teams were idle this week. Woodside’s win over Hampton may not have gotten them into the top ten, but it almost certainly means the Crabbers will be excluded from the playoffs.
Keep in mind that we now have two weeks left in the regular season, therefore, most teams have two games left at most.
recruit757 Top Ten
#1 Oscar Smith (3-0) – the Tigers had a convincing 51-0 win over previously undefeated Deep Creek on Saturday. PREVIOUS RANK: #1
#2 Lake Taylor (4-0) – The Titans dominated I.C. Norcom on Friday night. The Greyhounds (1-3) held a top ten ranking at the start of the season, but have lost three in a row. Lake Taylor gets another good test hosting Churchland this week. PREVIOUS RANK: #2
#3 Salem (3-0) – the Sun Devils received an unwanted week off due to Kempsville being put on a COVID hiatus. They have a scheduled bye week this week, then host First Colonial (0-4) in the finale. FC has been weak this year, scoring six points in their first game and not scoring since. PREVIOUS RANK: #3
#4 Maury (3-1) – the Commodores rose to the occasion against Norview, showing that their loss to Lake Taylor was perhaps an aberration. The Commodores draw Wilson (1-3) this week before finishing against Churchland (4-0). PREVIOUS RANK: #4
#5 Phoebus (3-0) – Phoebus played strong against Kecoughtan Saturday but are showing that this year’s squad is a second-half team. Point distribution in their last two games has been 17 first-half points vs. 39 second-half points. The remaining schedule is up in the air as Gloucester (1-0) has been idle since week one. Their originally scheduled final game against Denbigh was played in week one. PREVIOUS RANK: #9
#6 Churchland (3-0) – while the offense didn’t open up too much against Granby, the Truckers have been stout on defense all season. They gave up their first points of the season to the Comets in a 28-7 win. If they can close out strong, they’ll be well tested for the playoffs as they finish the regular season at Lake Taylor (4-0) and at Maury (3-1). PREVIOUS RANK: #8
#7 Deep Creek (3-1) – The Hornets fell flat against top-ranked Oscar Smith and as a result, they drop two spots in the ranking. They may be very competitive in the Region 5A playoffs, but Oscar Smith exposed some weaknesses. PREVIOUS RANK: #5
#8 Lafayette (3-0) – The Rams had a bye week. They host New Kent this week before finishing the season against York. PREVIOUS RANK: #7
#9 Princess Anne (3-1) – Princess Anne was pushed to overtime against Kellam on Friday, but the Cavaliers pulled out a 20-14 win. They’re making mistakes that will doom a playoff team sooner or later. Cox, Salem, Deep Creek, and Maury are possible Region 5A playoff opponents if they can make it into the postseason. PREVIOUS RANK: #6
#10 Cox (3-0) – The Falcons had a bye week. They’ll meet Kellam this week and Landstown to close out the season. PREVIOUS RANK: #10
On The Bubble: in no particular order – Ocean Lakes (3-1), Warwick (2-0), Warhill (3-1), Gloucester (1-0), Smithfield (1-0)
