Woodberry Forest quarterback Ben Locklear (2021 QB 6-4 210) was one of the guys who saw his recruitment bloom late.
Coming into the summer of 2020, he held an offer from William and Mary. The NCAA imposed dead period stunted Division I recruiting. It put a big pause on Locklear’s gathering of college interest.
On October 15, Locklear saw the dam break when he was offered a PWO with Virginia Tech.
Now, with the early signing period out of the way, Locklear took the opportunity to give his verbal commitment to the Hokies.

“When I took my visit junior year I fell in love with the energy and atmosphere of Virginia Tech. They were willing to give me an opportunity. I feel it’s the best place I can go to prove myself,” Locklear explained.
Ben plans to major in business, perhaps real estate for his college degree. The 6-4 gunslinger mentioned that he’s already familiar with the Hokies’ offense schemes and he was assured that his playing style fits right into what the Justin Fuente-led team likes to do.
“They usually run their offense around a pro-style guy, so I have the size and arm to fit into the scheme,” he said.
Like many other schools across the commonwealth, Woodberry Forest suspended their football season in 2020. They have a plan to play in the spring, and Locklear admitted that he doesn’t want to miss it. As of now, there’s only one game on the schedule and that’s against long-time rival Episcopal (Alexandria).
“The Game,” as it’s termed, was set for its 120th annual rendition this fall. If it’s the only game played, it will certainly be worthwhile and memorable for Ben Locklear.
As for his move into college ball, Ben is resolute: “the grind just continues,” said the big man.
