The Hoop Group hosted a slew of athletes at their Southern Jam Fest in Hampton, VA. Two of the major athletes featured over the weekend were Matt Coleman, former Maury guard, who is currently ranked #21 for his class according to ESPN and Trevon Duval, also known as the #1 PG for the class of 2017.
“I’ve gotten a lot stronger since my sophomore year to now by going to Oak Hill by staying in the weight room on a consistent basis with the help of my coaches. So I would say one taking the contact and two going to the hole has improved,” Coleman said over the weekend.
Outside of Coleman and Duval, some of the local athletes that shined in the tournament were Bethel’s Kyle Foster and Cam Bacote and Hampton’s Jalen Ray and Marquis Godwin.
“My confidence went up, I’ve been working out a lot this week with Stef (Stefan Welsh) and the way he was talking to me and working with me really gave me confidence because before I wasn’t really in the gym a lot but this week I put some work in and I think it really affected my game,” Foster noted.
Foster, Bacote and Ray tallied six three pointers each and Godwin, a future Richmond Spider, nailed seven three-pointers on the opening night of Southern Jam Fest.
“I had a great warm up and I’ve been shooting extra shots everyday this week, so I felt really comfortable shooting the ball during the game,”Bacote said of his performance.
Bacote had a hot hand all weekend long from beyond the arc and finished with a team-high 22 points in Team Loaded VA’s victory. The 2017 6’1 G is still available going into his senior year although he has obtained a lot of interest from colleges over his high school tenure.
“I haven’t received any new offers lately but I’ve been hearing from Mount Saint Mary’s the most and JMU, VMI, and Kent State have also contacted me recently,” the rising senior added.
