This weekend, teams from across the Hampton Roads area gathered on the campus of Old Dominion for the Monarchs annual team camp. IC Norcom, the defending Group 3A state champions, looked efficient in a 57-37 win over Northeastern (NC) in early morning action. The Greyhounds got solid offensive performances from wings KJ Davis and Travis Ingram, who looked to take on more of the team’s ball handling duties with last season’s point guard Travis Fields now at ODU. The trademark suffocating defense that has carried the Greyhounds to three consecutive state titles was also on display against Northeastern along with some timely three-point shooting.
Kecoughtan, who was playing without guard Taqwain Drummond, jumped out to an double-digit halftime lead against Grafton. Speaking of Drummond, the rising senior has appeared alongside former Salem guard TJ Taylor on the Oscar Smith roster this weekend. With the Tigers graduating seniors Donald Hicks and Dez Devane, Drummond and Taylor could potentially slide into the voids created by the pair. But with teams often shorthanded during summer events, it could be nothing more than a weekend substitution.
Williamsburg Christian used a strong defense to defeat Landstown, 49-44. WCA will miss ODU-bound guard Xavier Green next season. The team does return a strong backcourt led by senior Cle’von Greene. Greene averaged more than 20 ppg at Grafton before transferring to Williamsburg Christian. He was second on the team in scoring last year, as WCA won the Metro Conference title with Greene earning first-team all-state honors. The {now} James Madison, ODU and Virginia Tech. Twin brothers Da’shawn and Ra’shawn Cook also contribute on both ends of the court. A matchup between nationally-ranked guard Keldon Johnson of Parkview and Norcom is also scheduled to take place this evening. The three-day affair wraps up tomorrow with the finals. Competition will begin at 9:00am.
