Nansemond Suffolk’s Askew picking up new interest

Longtime Princess Anne girls’ basketball coach Darnell Dozier has led his team to 10 state title appearances, and can say that he and his teams have won seven VHSL state championship rings.
“These girl had tons of experience and tons of talents because they all came up from freshman to seniors,” Dozier said. “ This was the easiest team I’ve coached since I’ve been here because they already knew what to do when they got on the court and what I expected.”
Dozier had a big freshmen group class in 2013 that grew up together, and became the first group to have won three consecutive state titles.
“We are the only ones on the girls side who have accomplished this record and it’s a marvelous feeling,” said Dozier. “Our hardwork and dedication to the game of basketball is what sets us apart from other teams.”
A stickler for discipline, Dozier makes sure his girls know that if they are not willing to work hard that playing for his program is not the best choice for them.
“ We work hard, We make sure we stay in better shape than other teams. We believe in what we stand for and that’s winning” said Dozier.
Dozier has been coaching at PA for 20 years and has completely changed the program. In 2002, Dozier won his first titles with one of the best teams he had ever coached.
“My team in 2002 team was a at a disadvantage, but with HEART and HARDWORK they went undefeated with their tallest player being 5’9. The were the least talented team from positions 1 through 5,” Dozier stated.
Dozier has won numerous beach district, regional Championships, and state Championships, and he is confident that it will not stop after this year.
“We are graduating a great senior class, but we shouldn’t have a problem getting back nor winning another state championship as long as my girls continue to show their dedication and hardwork to this program,” Dozier said.
Dozier has sent a great amount of young female athletes off to college with full scholarships. He can say that he coached a young lady who is know in the WNBA. He can say that he has young ladies playing basketball overseas, he can say he coached young women who own their own businesses, and he can say he has coached young women who have one through college and began families.
With this program Dozier has created not only a championship winning team, but a basketball family with memories that will last for a lifetime.
