Virginia Tech has been racking up commitments. On Wednesday, Bishop O’Connell QB DeJuan Ellis became the second Class of to commit to Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech Hokies, following in the footsteps of South Carolina athlete Bryce Thompson of Irmo High School.
We saw Thompson at the Powerade 7-on- month, and we saw Ellis at the Nike Opening Regional at Centreville High School in April. Both are excellent prospects for Virginia Tech as Fuente makes a statement about the appeal of his offensive schemes as they now combine with legendary Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster’s lock down D.
Several of Virginia Tech’s defensive players were quoted in the first week of practice as saying “We don’t have to be perfect anymore,” since the offense is expected to be explosive under Fuente. At Memphis, his Tiger offense under first round NFL pick Paxton Lynch averaged 40.2 points and 486.9 yards of offense per game in 2015. The Tigers also ran an average of 79 plays per game, about 10% more than Beamer’s Virginia Tech offense did last year.
That appeals to a player like DeJuan Ellis. Ellis may be on the small side now, but the Hokies staff sees a lot of potential in him. DeJuan certainly likes the potential of the Hokies offense and he loves the play calling of Offensive Coordinator Brad Cornelsen.
“”I think Coach Fuente will get VT to the top again. He’s a great guy and loves the game of football and the offense is uptempo and fits my style of play,” said Ellis in an interview with Evan Watkins of 247Sports.
In addition to Ellis’ commitment, the Hokies recently grabbed a 2019 commitment in Tayvion “Tank” Land, a cornerback at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School in Virginia Beach.
