Norfolk State’s progress continues as Coach Latrell Scott hosts his second annual prospect camp
by Andy Hilton, recruit757
Last year’s Norfolk State one-day prospect camp was monumental. Somewhere around 160 campers came out to showcase for the Spartans, see the campus, and meet the coaching staff. Norfolk State offered more than a dozen locals that attended their one-day camp, and the Spartans landed ten locals as a part of the 2016 recruiting class.
Mike Carney (Lake Taylor), Bobby Price (Bishop Sullivan) J.T. Wahee (Lake Taylor), Devon Watford (Norview) and Tyre Givers-Wilson (Indian River) were among the guys who camped last year, received offers and decided to attend Norfolk State.
A handful of other prospects were at the Norfolk State one-day camp last year, but ended up going elsewhere. Stephen Copeland (Kellam) elected to go to Division I Elon of the CAA. Donte Lampley (Bayside) selected South Carolina State, and Greg Dortch of Highland Springs ended up going to Wake Forest. Raequan Purvis (Plymouth, NC) committed to East Carolina and Dazmine Palmer (Lake Taylor) committed to VMI.
Then there’s the underclassmen who camped last year to lay the groundwork for their recruitment. There are dozens of players that will be back this year, and you better bet that the Spartans’ coaching staff knows each one of them.
Norfolk State has been more aggressive than ever when it comes to recruiting in-state. They’re definitely defending their “backyard” of Norfolk, Hampton and Richmond. The Spartans not only grabbed 10 players from the 757, but they also landed three class of 2016 recruits from the Richmond area, and were chosen as having the third best recruiting class in the nation among HBCUs.
Latrell Scott and his staff mean business.
