After finishing as state-runner ups in Group 4A last season, Lake Taylor is in preliminary talks to host reigning Dick’s National Champion Oak Hill Academy, according to Titans’ head coach Kenny Brown. The Warriors feature ex-Maury guard Matt Coleman, who will begin his second and final season at the school.
Coleman, a four-star recruit in the ESPN class of 2016 rankings will return to the city where he first lept on the national radar, as a playmaking guard for Maury. His younger brother, Chase, will be a starting point guard for the Commodores this season. The contest would sure to be an electrifying homecoming for Matt, who starred at Maury for two seasons before heading to the national powerhouse. Last season ended with Oak Hill defeating La Lumiere in the national championship behind some clutch play from Coleman. NBA players like Carmelo Anthony, Ty Lawson, Kevin Durant and current Norfolk Collegiate head coach Junior Burrough have all suited up for Oak Hill legendary coach Steve Smith.
While not of the national prowess of Oak Hill, Lake Taylor return of Hampton Roads most talented rosters led by a trio of rising juniors: Joe Bryant Jr, Jalen Jordan and Dereon Seabron. Jordan had a career-high weekend’s Virginia Wesleyan Team Camp. Both Bryant and Seabron hold Division I offers.
The last meeting between a Hampton Roads school and Oak Hill nearly ended with a loss for the Warriors, with Cape Henry falling 81-76 in double overtime two seasons ago. A second matchup preceding the Lake Taylor-Oak Hill contest will be announced at a later date.
